Big A. The Weather Boy.

Big A has loved learning about the weather since he was very young, he actually wanted to be a meteorologist at one time. He even had a blog last year with weather as the theme, but slowly lost interest in that as well....he had nothing to write about except the dry, dry heat for the most part. As he's gotten older and realized the weather here is Southern CA isn't so exciting, his interest started to decrease more and more lately. This week is an exception, we are having some freak thunderstorms and even tornado warnings, which is really piquing his interest again. Next year we'll be doing earth science and some weather related studies, but until then we are having some real living science happening around here. Stay dry!

We are not very good caterpillar owners.

Kids were not too affected by it.

Dogs we can take care of, Caterpillars, sadly, no.

Don't Judge. You too, may be a caterpillar killer one day as well.

Science at Maranatha Prep

Science has been pretty interest led around here lately, and it really does happen naturally. Fortunately, here in So Cal we have great weather. The last few days have been in the 70's , so I have encouraged my children to go out in the backyard to explore. They have spent hours each day just running around the yard, but today Bigger A started really taking a closer look at the things that are IN the yard.

We now have a new pet caterpillar.

I used a quart sized mason jar and screwed the lid over a coffee filter. Poked holes in that and now we just need to add some sand to the bottom of our jar to keep this little guy going. Hopefully. I am no caterpillar expert ;)

Where did my WINTER go and why are my children running around outside without jackets? I have been robbed this year ;P

Our seeds have started to grow :-)

I don;t have time to post pics tonight but will tommorow..about half of our tomato seeds have grown and a few of our other ones as well :-)

Ha! Found Em!

I finally found our tomato seeds...lol....they were on my ds's desk..under a PILE of papers! So we got busy getting them planted so we can start our "blind experiment" from tomatosphere. They gave us 2 packets of seeds..One is labeled *A* and the other is *B*. Here are the peet pellets I bought to plant them in. We decided to use 24 of each of the packets, which will make 48 tomato plants...*if* they all germinate :-)

The first step was to soak the peet pellets in water for about 20 minutes....

We then planted the seeds (1in each pellet) and then carefully labeled each side of the greenhouse that the pellets came in. We planted the tomato seeds on each side of the greenhouse and used the middle to start some of our other seeds..Watermelon, dill, eggplant, and green peppers.

Here is Eeyore putting his greenhouse on his desk. He is responsible for watering it each day and charting the germination and growth of his little seedlings :) This is an awesome way to show him how wonderful God's creation is! We examined the seeds before we planted them and admired the sizes of them...I can't wait to see his expression when he sees his "experiment" starting to grow from seed to plant!

Tomato planting and Tomato Staking:

With recent health issues on my part, I am finding myself needing more time with my children...and I know they are needing more time with me. I told you all that I had an experience while in the hospital and I am taking "heed" to that (as my hubby would tell me to do)...So I am keeping my children close by tomato staking them..and how convenient...we are supposed to be planting tomatoes this week! If you don't know about Tomatosphere then may I suggest you check it out! They mailed us out some seeds as a blind experiment, so we are going to get them planted this week!

We started off by printing off the Teacher's resources available on the website and making a booklet that we could refer to:

Got our book all made...My comb binder was being tempermental so I ditched it and put it together the old fashioned way....with a stapler..lol!

Then I realized...........
UH? Where are the seeds? DANG! I can't remember where I put them..CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT? Bummer...

The dc weren't phased by it though..they decided to go outside a play and have ice cream....lol..even though its 92 degrees out :-)

They weren't phased by the loss of the seeds as much as I am...I'm losing it, I tell ya...

SO please pray I find them....WE HAVE TOMATOES TO PLANT!
